Requirements and permissions

macOS 14 or later. No special hardware is needed (the built-in speakers and microphone are enough). Basic device switching and volume need no permissions. Per-app Apple Music and Spotify volume asks for Automation permission for that app the first time. The experimental browser volume feature needs system audio capture permission and macOS 14.2 or later (it may not work in every environment).

How to verify

You can check in the Mac's Terminal that the downloaded file is the official one.

  • If the first line shows "accepted" and "source=Notarized Developer ID", the file has been notarized by Apple.
  • If the value from the second line matches the SHA-256 in the table above, the file has not changed since it was published. If it differs, do not open it; delete it and download again from this page.

Notarization is Apple's automated check for known malware. It does not guarantee the app's quality or behavior.

Install

How to install

  1. Open the DMG

    Double-click the downloaded SoundSwitch-0.4.3.dmg.

  2. Drag it to Applications

    Drag SoundSwitch in the window that opens into the Applications folder. "Open at login" is registered for the app in this location, so use it from there.

  3. Open SoundSwitch

    Open it from the Applications folder. A speaker icon appears at the top right of the menu bar, and a welcome window appears the first time only.

  4. Pin the devices you use

    Click the icon to open the panel, hover over a device you use often and click the pin. These devices become the targets of ⌃⌥O / ⌃⌥I.

  5. Turn on "Open at login"

    Turn on the switch at the bottom of the panel (ログイン時に起動) and SoundSwitch will sit in the menu bar whenever your Mac starts. It does not appear in the Dock.

If macOS asks for confirmation the first time, choose "Open".

The first-launch prompt

The first time you open it, macOS may ask whether you want to open an app downloaded from the internet. If the file came from this site, choose "Open". If you want to be sure first, check the notarization and SHA-256 as shown in "How to verify" above.

Also available with Homebrew

If you use Homebrew, you can install it from Terminal instead. It downloads the same file from this site and checks its SHA-256 before installing.

Update

How to update

At launch, if 24 hours or more have passed since the last check, SoundSwitch checks for a newer version and shows a notice only when one exists. Press "Update now" (今すぐ更新) and it downloads, verifies the SHA-256 and signature, replaces the app and relaunches automatically. You can also check from "Check for updates…" (アップデートを確認…) in the right-click menu. The launch check can be turned off in the Update tab of Settings.

To update by hand, download the new DMG from this page, quit SoundSwitch, replace SoundSwitch in the Applications folder and open it again. Your favorites and shortcuts are kept.

How to uninstall

  1. Turn off "Open at login"

    Turn off the switch at the bottom of the panel.

  2. Quit the app

    Choose Quit (終了) in the panel, or "Quit SoundSwitch" (SoundSwitch を終了) in the right-click menu.

  3. Move the app to the Trash

    Move SoundSwitch from the Applications folder to the Trash.

  4. To remove settings too

    Run the following in Terminal. It clears the settings file (~/Library/Preferences/jp.duca.SoundSwitch.plist).

If you allowed Automation or system audio capture, you can revoke them in System Settings → Privacy & Security. After the app is removed, macOS keeps the last selected sound devices, and you can change them in System Settings → Sound as usual.

  • Fixed installing an update from the update window leaving SoundSwitch unable to quit, so the new version was never installed. If this happens in 0.4.2 or earlier, force quit SoundSwitch with ⌥⌘Esc (Option + Command + Esc) and install the new version from this page..

0.4.2 (September 29, 2026)

  • Added "About this app". Open it from the menu (このアプリについて… at the bottom of the panel or in the right-click menu) to see the version, the copyright (© 2026 K386) and a link to the official site. It appears once on first launch and once after each update.

  • Fixed scrolling over the menu bar icon no longer changing the volume on macOS 27.
  • Scroll over any volume slider in the panel (output, Music, browser and call level) to adjust it.
  • Fixed browser volume control (experimental) failing to turn on on macOS 27.

  • Adjust the volume of Apple Music and Spotify individually, from 0 to 100%, right from the panel.
  • Lower for a call and restore afterwards, so music gets quieter only while you talk (the first use asks for Automation permission).
  • Experimental: lower the volume of Chrome, Comet, or Brave on its own (macOS 14.2 or later; Safari is not supported).
  • Browser volume needs system audio capture permission. Audio is processed on your Mac and is never saved or sent anywhere.

  • The Settings window now shows ordinary tabs along the top. Previously the tabs were a menu opened from a toolbar button, which made it hard to see where to switch.

  • Added a Devices tab to Settings. Only checked devices appear in the panel list.
  • Leave out devices you never use, such as virtual devices from meeting apps, to keep the list short. Unchecked devices are also removed from favorites (the ⌃⌥O / ⌃⌥I targets).
  • The device currently in use stays in the list even if unchecked. Newly connected devices appear from the start, as before.
  • The Settings window is organized into tabs (Shortcuts / Devices / Update).
